THUNDER BAY – NDP MPP Judith Monteith-Farrell released the following statement after news broke that Bombardier will be laying off 200 workers:
“I am deeply concerned for workers and their families at the Bombardier plant. They have been facing uncertainty for months. This layoff means that 200 families will be sitting down to have a heart-breaking conversation about how they’re going to keep food on the table and keep the bills paid.
Yet Doug Ford has provided no solutions. It’s not good enough for him to continue to sit on his hands as hundreds of families face hard times. Ford has known for many months he needed to get GO train and other transit vehicle orders in as the province is in need of expanding and upgrading its transit system, but he hasn’t. And Ford’s lack of a strategy for the manufacturing sector has left workers vulnerable at a time when people and the economy simply can’t withstand more blows.
It should never have come to this. There is no more time to waste. Doug Ford needs to step up now and try to save these jobs, and build up the sector, offering stability to workers, their families, and their communities.”
