Ford hurts Northerners by ending NOSM partnership with Lakehead

THUNDER BAY – NDP MPP Judith Monteith-Farrell (Thunder Bay-Atikokan) issued the following statement in response to the Ford government’s passage of a bill that ends the partnership of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) with Lakehead and Laurentian universities:

“Doug Ford has hurt Thunder Bay and Lakehead University and put the future of health care in Northern Ontario at risk. He ignored students, staff, and faculty at Lakehead as they called on him to stop his plan to cut the partnership between the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and the university.

Ford’s path of destruction at Laurentian now includes cutting ties with our medical school and Lakehead University. That partnership allowed for the successful creation of a northern network of health care that provided much-needed doctors throughout Northern Ontario.

During this pandemic, instead of providing funding and resources for the expansion of NOSM and northern health care, the Ford government has just cut their ties to northern universities and the resources that went along with it. This is damaging to Lakehead and creates uncertainty at NOSM.

I am calling on Doug Ford to invest in NOSM, stop cutting resources from our universities, and restore the partnership. During this unprecedented health care crisis, this government should be providing the funds needed so our medical school can have more students and northern families and communities can have more doctors and more health care, not less.”
